Opción para que no botemos más el voto

Hola, cuando escribí la entrada anterior en este blog, me preguntaron: ¿y entonces qué? ¿Cuál es la solución a esta situación? Menuda responsabilidad me he puesto encima a partir de escribir sobre el voto. Tuve miedo. No sé si realmente sea apto para el cargo, como dicen. Sin embargo, luego, pedaleando en la bicicleta al trabajo algo se me ocurrió y quiero compartirlo con ustedes.

En primer lugar el voto en Colombia debería ser obligatorio. Todo colombiano apto para votar debería hacerlo. Ya que el primer eslabón roto en la cadena de la democracia es el abstencionismo. En lo que nuestro país tiene una gran tradición, ya que por lo general el abstencionismo es mayor al 50% de quienes pueden votar. Salvo en 1998 la tendencia superior a la mitad se mantiene, incluso en 1994 es cercana al 70% en ambas vueltas de la ronda electoral. La principal razón es la falta de confianza en la gestión de los políticos y la consecuente apatía hacia su elección a través de la democracia.

Pero que los ciudadanos volvamos a tener confianza en las instituciones está cuesta arriba en Colombia. La imagen desfavorable del gobierno Santos es un valor estadístico muy cercano al del abstencionismo: 56% de acuerdo a la encuesta Colombia Opina.

Y cabe pensar: ¿serán estas las mismas personas? Con frecuencia los números nos muestran extrañas coincidencias que de igual forma resaltan lo importante: más de la mitad de los posibles votantes en Colombia no creen ni en la democracia, ni en lo que la representa. Y a menos que tengamos otra solución para nuestro sistema social que uno de representación entonces sacarle lo mejor.

Lo segundo es que los votantes deben tener una alocución pública, frente a la sociedad, que demuestre que han considerado por quién votar y que si ninguno los convence pueden votar en blanco. Esta situación social puede crearnos conciencia sobre nuestro voto y hacer que, por fin, realmente podamos organizarnos como una democracia. No una falsa oligarquía disfrazada sino el poder de un pueblo que quiere ser libre.

Un experimento social de este tipo puede ser una de las soluciones que necesite Colombia para crecer hacia una verdadera democracia.

An idea to avoid the throwaway votes

Hi, when I wrote my last entry to this blog, somebody asked me: and now what? What is the solution? Such a heavy weight has been put on my shoulders since I wrote about the vote. I was scared, I didn´t know if I was the one for this duty. But later on, I was riding my bicycle to work when it came out: a possible solution I want to share with you.

Firstly, to vote must be mandatory, at least for once and then for the newcomers. Every Colombian that is able to vote must do it, as abstentionism is a broken link in our democratic system. Our country has a huge tradition on abstentionism, with 50% of the population not participating in almost every national election. Only the 1998 election was that figure less than the 50%. But the trend seems to be going up and in 1994 is close to 70% of people abstained in both electoral rounds. The main reason is the lack of confidence in politician’s management and the resulting apathy to elect them through democratic elections.

But to be confident again in Colombian institutions is unlikely. Unfavorable image of Santos’ government is a statistical value very close to abstentionism number’s: 56% according to Colombia Opina survey.

It´s also worth asking: is it always the same people that abstain? Frequently numbers show odd coincidences, but highlighting that which is most important: more than the half of the Colombians do not believe in our current system of representative democracy, or in closer to reality what it represents to them. Unless we have a better solution for our social system than representation, we have to make the most out of it.

Secondly, voters must have the right to speak freely in public, showing we have considered for whom to vote and stating that if we don’t believe in any of the candidates we can spoil our ballot as a protest against the proposed candidates. This situation may breed in us some consciousness about our vote and, finally, may lead us towards real democracy. Leaving behind an old oligarchy disguised as a democracy and giving the people the power to be free.

Such a social experiment could be a possible solution for Colombia in order to achieve a true state of democracy.
